As my daughter is reaching a new plateau in her academic career, she has a desire to play in the school band. For the past few years, she's been playing the piano, but since rolling pianos aren't allowed in the band, I guess a change would be beneficial. She wants to play the flute...

Within the next year, we were planning to move closer to our jobs, but we contemplated staying at our present location a few times. Though there is a financial benefit, the distance, gas prices, and weekly mileage were deterring factors. So, we decided to move when a house came available - a 12-16 month wait.

Last week, we attended my daughter's orientation for her next grade. We had an opportunity to visit the classrooms and meet her future teachers and current friends. I was impressed by the size and opportunities the school provided. Their art and music programs were very professional, spacious, and inviting - they reminded me of the Magnet Schools that were in Los Angeles. (The Magnet Schools in Los Angeles were schools that specialized in the performing and visual arts and math and science.)

I was fortunate enough to attend visual art Magnet schools from 6-12th grade. From the fourth grade, I developed a 'knack' for art. After finishing my fifth grade year in Compton, my father enrolled me in a Magnet school for visual art. I enjoyed the new atmosphere and the collaboration of ideas and talents with other students with a love for art. Though I never pursued a career in visual art, the designs you see throughout this website are a reflection of the teaching I received and the efforts my father made to see my talent blossom.

As we were going through the school, my daughter commented that she wanted to stay at the current school. (Now, if we were to move next year, she would have to change schools.) So, when we returned home, I asked her if she wanted to stay at the school...she reiterated her desire to stay, so I spoke with my wife about it. We decided not to move so we can ensure she is in an environment for developing her talents and a place she feels comfortable and safe. This situation reminded me of the sacrifices my father made to ensure my talent was developed.

There may come a time when you may need to make a similar decision for one of your children. Every situation is different and must be considered in prayer and counseling, but please consider the needs of the child as well. Too often, decisions are made without considering their needs...
