In the past few weeks, there has been a lot of attention on the DaVinci Code movie. Many Christians label the movie as an attack on Christianity because of the claims made in reference to Jesus and the Bible. Now, I'm not going to refute the 'specifics' in this setting, but I wanted to address the number of Christian ministries using the DiVinci Code to make a profit from their own brothers and sisters in the faith.
The refuting the DiVinci Code book or movie can be done with a chapter-and-verse dissection and some short history lessons: provide what the DiVinci Code states, and then provide scriptural and/or historical references that disprove it. A discussion of this nature wouldn't take long, yet many Christian ministries are providing special DVDs and books for a 'special gift' offering.
Outside of the claims of historical events outside of the New Testament period, the answers for the DiVinci Code claims are in our Bibles! Why is there a need to provide packaged resources for a price? If the DaVinci Code is such a detriment to Christianity, why can't we unify and provide free resources that everyone can receive? Most people won't buy DVDs and books unless they are a supporter of the ministry or feel strongly enough about the issue. Without these materials, many people may not have the appropriate resources or knowledge to refute these unfounded claims and may be deceived through the contents of the book and/or movie. Do we blame the people for not buying the materials for any deception or ignorance or do we provide every opportunity to empower our people with the truth?!
