Many of us wait many years to receive directions from the Lord. As we receive His guidance and instructions, we find it an honor and a joy to carry out His specific purpose for our lives. There are times when God is very specific with His instructions and general with others. Regardless of what instructions God gives us, open roads, roadblocks, and detours are placed before us.

Open roads represent the path God gives us toward obedience in His will. Roadblocks are the ‘barriers’ placed on roads that do not lead to God’s perfect will – disobedience and sin. Detours are roads that may not be blocked, but can move us further from His will and possibly toward disobedience. God gives us the free choice to decide which ‘road’ we will take and we must always allow the open roads (to His will) have precedence in our lives.

There will be many things that try to steer our attention from the open roads of God’s will. If we are not careful, we can find ourselves dismantling and pushing our way through the roadblocks and taking detours. Many detours and blocked roads can seem good and even beneficial to ourselves and others (for a short time), but in the end, they distract our attention, keep us away from the will of God, and can possibly hurt ourselves and others.

There are many roads out there, but they don’t all lead to the will of God for our lives. May we all find (and wait patiently) for the open roads and stay clear of the roadblocks and detours.
