There aren't many things that impress me. People usually have to do something pretty amazing to get my attention. Though are many ideas, processes, and products produced on a daily basis, there are two things (in particular) that really inspire me: (1) great artwork and design and (2) seeing someone achieving a far-reaching goal.

Great Artwork and Design

As an artist, I have a deep appreciation for outstanding design. As I focus more on web design, I'm inspired by stylish (yet simple) web designs. Yesterday I had an opportunity to view a site that brought true inspiration. Though the website is undergoing an 'upgrade,' the updated sections are original, simple, and stylish. I was so impressed that I felt inspired to update this site. As I considered the various options for upgrading, the Lord reeled me back 'to reality' by reminding me of His guidance for Spiritual Combatants. Even though I felt inspired to update this site as well, I must stay within God’s direction and use the motivation in areas of His approval...like writing this entry!

Achieving a Far-Reaching Goal

I get really inspired when I see someone take on a great challenge, overcome/persevere, and live 'abundantly' in their calling (doesn't have to be monetary) - especially those in ministry. A few years ago, I had an opportunity to attend one of the world's largest churches. I was in awe of the congregation (their size, unity, and passion) and the size of its ministries. The church has about three separate buildings covering three city blocks - from youth ministry to newcomer's orientation. They also have a newspaper (only covering positive stories) that was ranked 4th in the city.

I was truly amazed to see how one person’s journey in Christ could build something that would affect so many people around the world. Of course I had dreams and desires of taking on the ‘world’…and the Lord reminded me of His purpose for me.

-----------------------------------------------

Even though there are many things out there that inspire us, we cannot use them as our sole reason for growth. Our progress should be founded on God's direction, not on what we see or hear.

-----------------------------------------------

Additionally, we should not become jealous over the talents and gifts we see...

James 3:16 (KJV) - For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

Proverbs 14:30 (KJV) - A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.

Now, I believe it's OK to be inspired through the works of others! Just as evil communication and friendships are not good (1 Corinthians 15:33; Psalm 1:1), I believe people of inspiration are beneficial toward our development and growth in the Lord.

Inspiration often provides the 'spark' we need to move forward...but while moving forward, we must ensure it's in alignment with God's direction for our lives. If the direction we want to take isn't in God's plans (for us), we can 'move' our energies in areas that are aligned with His will. Even though this may not be the 'time' for me to redesign the website or start a world-reaching church, I can use the motivation I received to build sound web content.
