Many men and women don't consider their spouses as an important part of their work, ministry, or volunteering efforts. Because of this, they feel that their spouses cannot provide any substantial help or support…and if they do, it's usually discarded. They often feel that their spouse is getting in the way of their 'work' - hindering their ultimate goal and calling in life.

What does a spouse have to gain in preventing their spouse from fulfill their calling and potential?

  • Don't they live in the same house and share the same resources?!

Has the man or woman considered that their spouse is only looking out for their spouse's ultimate well-being?

Maybe their spouse only wants to see them succeed and be all that God is calling them to be.

Even though the spouse may not have the same calling or position, the marital relationship provides the cornerstone of unity and support to fulfill God's will...

Genesis 2:18 (KJV) - And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help meet for him.

Genesis 2:24 (KJV) - Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

The translated word for cleave is dābaq, which is to cling or adhere; abide, fast together, be joined (together), stick.

So, what can a spouse provide?

1. Counsel (advice).

As the spouse is a part of the man or woman, they are their closest advisor. They often see what the man or woman doesn't as they may have a bird's eye view of many situations.

Proverbs 19:20 (KJV) - Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.

The spouse can hear from God as well. The man or woman shouldn't think they're the only one that can hear from God.

2. Support and love.

As the half that makes the man or woman whole, the spouse can help them stand when they fall; hold their head up when it's down; steer to the right when they go left; and restore what has been destroyed.

3. Warning.

Because the spouse may have an overview of many situations (and hear from God), they may see trouble long before it comes. Instead of classifying their help as 'nagging,' the man or woman should first consider what they are saying because they can save you a lot of headache and trouble down the line.

5. Touching in agreement.

Matthew 18:19-20 (KJV) - Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

The spouse is in the house...

Take time to consider the importance of your spouse in your life, work, and ministry. Their contribution may be greater than you think. Your spouse makes you whole and can help you fulfill God's assignment for your life. You may find that without your spouse, fulfilling your purpose may be an uphill battle. Your calling may be for you, but your spouse will help you get there.
