This message was originally written for youth workers, but it can be applied to other ministry settings.

PRAYERFUL

As 'spiritual' carpenters, you are given the task of building and developing young lives. The storms of life are definitely coming and you will have to build them upon the rock of God's word (Matthew 7:21-27) so that they can weather through them. It is imperative that you have a solid blueprint, proper materials, funds, and support. Have you counted the cost of your 'construction' project (Luke 14:25-34)? Do you have the blueprint for constructing the lives under your care? Do you know exactly what materials you will need? Do you have the proper tools? What about your work crew?

These questions can only be answered through the guidance provided by the 'Master Architect.' The lives of our youth are too important to be negligent or haphazard in our approach to ministering to them. They are God's children with a specific purpose placed within each of them.

PURPOSEFUL

What is your purpose behind the programs and lessons you have? You should have a purpose beyond keeping the children occupied for two hours. Everything you do within the youth ministry should be about meeting a specific goal or purpose God has given you. God has placed them within your care to loving teach them His precious Word. You can have a profound impact on their development and growth - even if you only see them for a couple hours a week...it's not about the quantity of time, but the quality of the time.

PERSONAL

Many Christians have heard the cliché, 'Fake it until you make it.' When it comes to the personal touch, there's no faking! Children can smell the foul odor of 'fakeness' a mile away. All youth workers aren't naturally playful or talkative, but the genuine expression of love and compassion you show will introduce them to a loving and compassionate Savior.

You don't have to be like someone else - just be yourself. What works for someone else may not work for you. Allow the gifts and talents God has given you to radiate through you. Youth ministry is not about numbers or popularity. It is a ministry to youth...no matter how big or small!
