1 Timothy 2:5 (KJV) - For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?
As a leader in the church (bishop, pastor, elder, minister, volunteer, etc.), if your house is messed up, it may be a good idea to remove yourself from ministering. In Paul's qualifications for elders, deacons, bishops, young, and old, etc., there's a great emphasis on the outward lifestyle of the person in leadership.
The leader has been given the charge to teach, preach, instruct, and love those placed under their care - leading them to godliness. When the sins (or problems) of a leader begin to affect their leadership and discipleship, they place themselves and their people (congregation and all who support/listen) in danger.
It is not enough for leaders to be able to preach a good message and be a good church administrator; they must also display characteristics that exemplify Paul's instructions to Timothy and the Lord's description of a disciple (through love). If the leader remains unrepentant or unwilling to take some downtime to focus on their issues, the leader's focus; righteous lifestyle; and ability to minister effectively may be diminished. Sure, the Word will not return void and God's purpose will be done, but the leader should not think everything is 'status quo' and is OK to continue. This situation only leads the leader to a hardened (and unrepentant) heart and a false sense of godliness and approval.
Additionally, if the situation comes to the peoples' attention, there may be a number of consequences. For one, the situation will create opposing sides for and against the leader's situation. Then, a number of emotions and actions may develop as the people struggle to determine the best course of action to take. Plus, some people may use the leader's indiscretion(s) as 'approval' to commit the same act(s). (Though the leader may not be responsible for the person's direct action, the leader is accountable to address their situation in this context. They are their brother's keeper.) Lastly, the situation will bring a negative mark on the Christian witness at large.
Leaders, feed your people by ensuring you are properly fed first. Take the time to build your life and family in accordance with God's will. Downtime shouldn't be considered a 'mark' of weakness, shame, defeat, or failure. It is a sign of courage, strength, and integrity. Set your desire to serve the Lord with a pure heart and life.
