Falling on Ice

Today, I went ice skating with my family. This is the first time in about 25 years that I have been on the ice. I can't remember much from my first trip to the ice rink, but I know that I spent most of the time next to the rail.

I was a little nervous at first, but after a while, I was able to skate around the rink without any help. My daughter was skating around the rink and I wanted to join her. She was skating a little faster than I was, so I tried to speed up to catch and the next thing I knew…BAM…I was on the floor.

I immediately thought of 1 Corinthians 10:12 (KJV):

Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

Ice skating requires a lot of concentration and balance in order to stay upright. For that split second, I thought I was beyond a beginning skater and could control the ice. Well, the ice (and gravity) showed me who was ‘in charge’ and put me in my place…on the ground.

With all things in my life, I must remember to stay humble and not to think I am above anyone or anything. If I exalt myself, I will certainly be humbled (Matthew 23:12).
