Each November, we embark on a season of reflection, thanksgiving, and new beginnings. Thanksgiving begins the season of giving thanks for the many blessings and circumstances that fill our lives.  People, places, and things often fill our heart and mouth with songs of praise and thankfulness.

On 3 September 2005, my grandfather passed away.  Though I am saddened by his absence, I am thankful for the legacy he displayed before me as a young boy.  I learned about the fruits of hard work and love that builds and carries a family.  I reflect on his life and the ‘message’ he placed within each person he touched and I am truly thankful for the light of hope, love, peace, and commitment he gave to others.

I am even thankful for the situations in my life that have not been very pleasant.  They teach me to take inventory of myself, correct my behavior where needed, and persevere beyond what I thought I was capable (through Christ…of course).

Today, I reflect upon the life of Jesus Christ and the lives of those closest to me.  The gift of life and eternal life through Jesus Christ is the most precious I have ever received.  Last night, my family and I went to a play at a local church.  Though there were elements within the play I didn’t agree with, I was thankful that the Holy Spirit drew over 20 people to Jesus Christ.  I learned that even in the imperfections of man, God moves in and through us to draw people to Himself.

As I approach the New Year, thoughts of a new beginning (in some area of my life) churn within me:  eat right, exercise more, pray harder, pray longer, love more, hate less, etc.  If I’m not careful, I could spend too much time focusing on the problems, rather than the solutions - exchanging praise and thankfulness for disappointment and despair.  I cannot lose my thanksgiving and praise!

At the beginning of this season, I was reminded of those that may have little to be thankful for or the motivation to face another day.   They see their lives and the situations that surround them as bleak, hopeless, and void of life.  Their perspective of themselves (and their situation) spirals them into an abyss which seems impossible to escape.  Some seek comfort from alcohol, drugs, physical abuse, or even ending their life to remove themselves from the pain of their circumstances.

In the midst of our happiness and thanksgiving, we should make an effort to lend a hand, heart, ear, shoulder, prayer, or whatever may be required for those having a difficult time.  Thanksgiving through New Years can be especially tough on some, but there are hurting people all around us throughout the year.  Are you willing and available to help someone in need?  What you can do to help will depend on the specific circumstances and guidance from the Lord.  Be open, available, and ready.  May each of us do our part to shine the light of Jesus Christ into the darkness of hopelessness and despair.
