When things around us seem their darkest (darker than walking in the shadow of the Valley of Death - Psalm 23), we must continue to rejoice in the salvation of the Lord. Even though our circumstances may not change, God's goodness, love, and mercy does not. Praise keeps our minds on the Lord and not the plight of our circumstances.
Habakkuk 3:17-19 (KJV) - Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.
Psalm 126:5-6 (KJV) - They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.
Isaiah 61:10 (KJV) - I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
Peace, contentment, and joy should be continuous, regardless of my circumstances and situations. For the past week, I've experienced deeply depressing and saddening situations and the scriptures above (and others on joy, peace, etc.) remind me to keep my circumstances in their proper perspective.
Isaiah 26:3 (KJV) - Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
Father, teach us to praise you and focus on your love in the best and worse of times.
