What does it mean to love someone as yourself (Matthew 22:36-40)?
1. It does not matter how another person treats you. Their behavior is not your standard, whether they behave in good or bad ways.
2. The standard is how you want to be treated.
Do you like someone who calls to check on you? Check on them.
Do you like to be surprised with gifts? Surprise them with one.
Do you like people who learn about what you like so they can know how to best care for you and help you? Do that for others.
Do you want a favor, mercy, someone to be kind…maybe a second chance or a little help? Do that for others.
3. Do not try to compare what you do with what they do. If you do this, it will become a trap for you. God’s love is not based on a merit system. Love your enemies. Repay evil with good.
Remember: it is to your glory to overlook an offense and love covers a multitude of sins (Proverbs 19:11, 1 Peter 4:8).
